Dhela Zone In Jim Corbett National Park

Dhela Ecotourism Zone: The Rising Star of Jim Corbett

For a long time, the names "Dhikala" and "Bijrani" were the only ones travelers whispered when planning a trip to Corbett. But in 2014, the forest department opened a new door: The Dhela Ecotourism Zone.

What started as a "backup" zone for those who couldn't get permits elsewhere has quickly become a primary destination. At Corbett Step, we’ve watched Dhela transform into a powerhouse of wildlife activity. Spanning over 1,173 hectares, Dhela isn't just a forest; it’s a thriving ecosystem where the tigers are bold, the elephants are majestic, and the birds are spectacular.

If you want a safari that feels fresh, peaceful, and full of surprises, Dhela is your answer.

Why Dhela is Stealing the Spotlight

1. The "Laldhang" Migration Corridor

Dhela shares a boundary with the famous Laldhang Chaur. This massive grassland acts as a natural highway for animals moving between different parts of the park. Because it’s a "corridor," you never know who might be passing through—it’s a hotspot for spotting large elephant herds and wandering male tigers.

2. Open 365 Days a Year

Like its neighbor Jhirna, Dhela stays open through the monsoon. When the heavy rains turn the rest of the park into a restricted area, Dhela becomes the star. The moisture-laden Sal forests look like something out of a movie during the rains.

3. A Recent Surge in Tiger Sightings

In the last few seasons, Dhela has outperformed many older zones. Several resident tigresses have made this zone their home, and sightings of mothers with cubs near the waterholes have become a regular treat for our guests at Corbett Step.

4. The Owl & Raptor Capital

If you are a bird watcher, Dhela is non-negotiable. It is famous for its diverse population of owls and birds of prey. From the Peregrine Falcon to various Hornbills, the canopy here is always buzzing with life.

The Safari Experience: What to Expect

  • Entry Gate: Dhela Gate (Located about 15-20 km from Ramnagar).
  • The Terrain: You’ll drive through a beautiful mix of dry riverbeds (relais), dense Sal thickets, and open grasslands. The variety of trees here is higher than in many other zones, making it feel like a "true" jungle.
  • Safari Timings:
    • Winter: 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM | 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM
    • Summer: 6:00 AM – 9:30 AM | 3:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Staying at the Dhela Forest Rest House (FRH)

For those who want to experience the jungle after the sun goes down, the Dhela FRH offers an authentic ecotourism stay.

  • The Setting: You are surrounded by a secure solar-powered electric fence, but the jungle is right there. It’s common to hear the trumpeting of wild elephants just a few meters away while you sit on the porch.
  • The Vibe: It is raw, quiet, and deeply peaceful. There is no Wi-Fi or TV—just the sounds of the night.
  • Booking: Like all rest houses, permits are limited. Corbett Step can help you navigate the forest department's booking portal to secure your stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: No, Dhela is a recognized core tourism zone. It has the same level of protection and wildlife density as Bijrani or Dhikala.

Q: Can we see Leopards in Dhela?
A: Yes! The dense canopy and mixed forest of Dhela are actually preferred by leopards, who like to hide in the thick branches above the tracks.

Q: How far is it from the city?
A: It’s a comfortable 30-minute drive from Ramnagar. If you are staying in the Sawaldeh or Dhela resort belt, you are practically at the doorstep!
